Superintendent's Corner

August 15, 2006

Dear Students, Families and Staff:

It seems like only a few days ago when the curtain closed on graduation. Despite the heat and humidity the Class of 2006 had a great “send off.” Unlike last summer your return from summer vacation will be marked with an elementary school free from construction debris. The secondary campus will include new lab hardware and a renovated science room. The science room cabinetry is expected in mid-September.

We have a few new “faces” in each building and our principals have described those staff changes to you. It will seem strange not being able to joke with Henry Henderson and congratulate him on the success of his mighty “Mets!”

You should be very proud of the success of your students this past year. The academic program has demonstrated steady growth each year as DCS’ performance has matched our suburban counterparts. The writing/language arts initiative with Tanya Schnabl will continue as we have contracted for five staff development days with CASDA for the 2006-2007 school year.

The State Education Department has developed universal student IDs and will be making the database of state assessment information directly available to teachers through the web and accessible from your home. We will provide more details during the school year.

While it is not listed on your opening day schedule, I have been talking with MVP (health care provider) concerning their Employee Assistance Programs. I have asked them to explain their services on Wednesday morning. It will be a short, half-hour presentation but one that could be very useful.

This past week a teacher stopped into my office to describe a summer conference she attended. Her energy and enthusiasm was contagious. Many of you have also been involved with summer staff development and curriculum projects. I look forward to learning more about these experiences.

You may be interested in the following updates.
  • Supervisor of Buildings & Grounds Ken Vanderwerker has announced his retirement. Kenny has spent his career at DCS and will be missed!
  • Lew DeFilippo, will be completing the interim Business Administrator position on December 31. Lew’s return from retirement has been a great benefit to the district. I will miss his daily friendship and “hearty” laugh.
  • Physical education teacher Sarah Strain has moved back home to Mt. Morris, NY. I wish her well as she pursues new opportunities.
  • If you see a couple of new students who seem a little different it may be because we will host two foreign exchange students – an Italian and a Danish student.

Enjoy the rest of the summer! I look forward to your return in two weeks.

Sincerely,

Mark Villanti, Ed.D.
