September 20, 2006

Dear Students, Families and Staff:

We are entering our third week of the school year. Both buildings are off to a good start. Our new faculty and staff seem to be adjusting and melding well in each building. I have been very busy this week interviewing candidates for Supervisor of Building and Grounds position. A number of staff members and the Board of Education Building and Grounds Committee helped interview seven candidates last Friday. We hope to conclude the process with an appointment at our October 3 Board of Education meeting.

We have just received our initial results from the ELA grades 3 – 8 testing this week. The results are embargoed until next week when the Commissioner reveals statewide information. This is the first time testing has included grades beyond 4 and 8. Frankly, there is a great advantage having access to student performance data for each grade level and our faculty and administrators will use this information to improve instruction. The parent information reports are improved from past years. It will likely take a couple of weeks once the data is released to mail the information home to you. I hope you find the reports user-friendly. If you have any questions, please contact your child’s teacher, guidance counselor or the principal.

Our parent open houses begin on Wednesday, Sept. 20, for grades K-2. This is an opportunity to meet and greet your child’s teacher and learn about the curriculum and classroom procedures. Our open houses are always well attended. Please take advantage of this opportunity even if this may be your third child through school. Parent involvement in school activities and programs is one of the greatest predictors of student success in school.

The Board of Education is carefully reviewing the need for a capital project at the secondary campus that addresses a variety of needs including the current technology room, energy conservation, renovating the locker rooms, paving the lower parking lot and other mechanical deficiencies. We have an Excel grant from the state that would cover the district share of costs. Please attend a Board of Education meeting on the first or third Tuesday of the month to learn more about this project.

We have a new Webmaster this year, Audrey Hendricks; she is working hard to help make the district Web site a valuable community resource. Please feel free to e-mail Audrey at ahendric@gw.neric.org or me at mvillant@mum.neric.org with any suggestions for improvement.

Sincerely,

Mark Villanti, Ed.D.
