April 10, 2008 - Fourth-grader Tim Rokos loves to read. He
owns many of his favorite books from the Spiderwick
Chronicles, Artemis Fowl and The Sea of Trolls
series. But, he sometimes borrows books from the school
library or the library where his mother works—if they have
them.
In March, Rokos went to the state Capitol during the New
York Library Association’s Legislative Rally to speak about
the importance of increasing library funding for schools to
purchase needed books and materials.
“We are so proud of Tim Rokos and his participation in NYS
Library Lobby Day,” said Duanesburg Elementary School
librarian Donna Wilkes. “I hope Tim will serve as an
inspiration for other students to come forward and tell
government leaders about the need to increase funding so
libraries can continue to be there for their students.”
Despite the cameras surrounding him, Rokos was able to
overcome his nerves to address the large crowd who had
assembled for the event.
“Thank you for the extra 25 cents per student for books that
we got last year,” he said. “My school librarian says
schools now get $6.25 per pupil, but the average book costs
$18. If library materials aid is increased to $10 per pupil,
my schools can buy more books.”
Rokos said that, because he felt strongly about his
comments, his presentation was one of his favorite parts of
the day.
“Libraries need more money so they can get more books,” said
Rokos.
“Seeing a student advocate for library funding shows that
students feel their school libraries are essential in their
learning experience,” said Wilkes. “After all, who knows
better about what resources are available in school
libraries than our students.”
Following the rally, Rokos, along with his mother, Sue Rokos,
assistant director/youth services consultant for the Mohawk
Valley Library System, and other members of the New York
Library Association met with six senators and assemblymen
representing Schenectady, Schoharie, Fulton and Montgomery
counties.
Members of the community are encouraged to contact their
local Legislators’ offices, see box below, to voice their
support for increased library funding.
“By keeping K-12 libraries well-stocked, well-staffed and
integrated with classroom curriculum, we instill in our
students the experience and excitement that motivates
life-long learning,” said Wilkes.
