Jan. 14, 2008 - Members of the middle/high school’s Leo Club are still recovering from a flurry of charitable activities this holiday season.

“We had a really busy month,” said high school junior and club president Colby Hochmuth.

The 30-member community service club began their busy season in late November, preparing food for the Equinox Community Service Agency’s Thanksgiving dinner at the Empire State Plaza in Albany.

“There was a lot of food there,” said Hochmuth.

In fact, there was more than 8,000 pounds of turkey at the annual event. Club members helped pull meat from the cooked turkeys, among other culinary tasks.

The club also gathered after school to prepare about 80 greeting cards to send to troops in the Middle East.

“We used pre-made cards and also made some,” said Hochmuth. “It was an easy thing to do.”

Club members also helped make the holidays brighter for some local families in need. In December, the group sold holiday wreaths they designed to benefit the Adopt-A-Family program sponsored by the Northeast Parent and Child Society. The club raised about $300, which was used to purchase gifts on their adopted family’s wish list. Hochmuth shopped for the modest items including kitchen supplies, winter clothing, and toys.

As part of the Toys for Tots campaign, Leo Club members helped wrap and organize gifts that were distributed to about 30 children in the Duanesburg area.

After a couple of weeks of well-deserved down time, the group will begin brainstorming ideas and activities for the spring during their next meeting on Wednesday, Jan. 16.

“It’s never too late to join,” said Hochmuth. “It’s fun and it’s also a good way to meet people and spend time with your friends while helping others.”

Anyone interested in participating should feel free to attend a meeting. The club typically meets once a month on Wednesdays after school in room 116. For a complete meeting schedule, contact guidance counselor Neal Silverman.
