March 31, 2008 - Duanesburg
Central School District officials are concerned that newly
sworn in Governor David Paterson has indicated he will
continue with a plan, first proposed in January by former
Gov. Eliot Spitzer, to eliminate the state's school resource
officer program.
This means New York State
troopers, like Chip Johnstone who currently serves as
Duanesburg's school resource officer, would be redeployed to
higher-crime areas as part of Operation IMPACT, the state's
inner-city crime reduction program.
In an effort to reverse this proposal, school officials are
sending
letters to local legislators and are encouraging parents,
staff, students and members of the community to do the same.
The SRO program is crucial for rural school districts, like
Duanesburg,
that have no local police department. Our school resource
officer’s
presence ensures that we receive the immediate response to
emergencies that our students and staff need and deserve.
Trooper
Johnstone can be found walking our hallways, visiting our
classrooms and talking with students throughout the entire
school district—providing a proactive approach for dealing
with the pressures facing today’s youth. Our students see
him as an advisor, a positive role model and someone they
can trust to help them through difficult times.
If you oppose this measure, please join us in our
letter-writing campaign to Gov. David Paterson, Senator Hugh
T. Farley and local assemblyman George Amedore, see box
right.
