March 31, 2009 – Duanesburg social studies teacher Susan Clark and Duanesburg High School senior Stephen Karandy were honored at the 22nd Annual Capital District YMCA Outstanding Student and Educator awards breakfast on March 19.

The program recognizes educators and students who unselfishly give of their time and talent to community service projects and who serve as positive role models in school and community settings. Although only one individual is chosen to receive each one of the awards, all nominees are recognized for the exceptional contributions they have made and the impact they have had on their peers.

Susan Clark
“Sue is a superlative teacher,” wrote Duanesburg High School Principal Beth DeLuke in her nomination letter. “She consistently goes above and beyond to ensure that her students are successful—not just academically, but emotionally as well.”

For the past few years, Clark has participated in the Teaching American History grant through Union College, which is designed to raise student achievement by improving teacher's knowledge, understanding and appreciation for United States history. Clark has used the knowledge gained to develop, coordinate and pilot lessons with eighth- and twelfth-grade students.

This year, Clark coordinated a school History Day competition for all eighth-graders as part of National History Day, a year-long educational program designed to promote the study and interpretation of history by middle and high school students. Two students have been selected to move on to the statewide competition in May.

Stephen Karandy

Stephen Karandy carries an active academic schedule, including participation in college level courses and the BEST program (Basic Education for Student Teachers), which provides junior and senior students with hands-on experience assisting teachers at the elementary school.

“Stephen serves as a tremendous role model for other students,” said DeLuke, who nominated him for the award.

In addition to his work ethic in the classroom, Karandy is committed to his school and local community. He is student council co-president and a senior class representative. He is a member of National Honor Society, high school band, All-County band, and editor of the school newspaper. Karandy competes on the district’s wrestling, baseball and soccer teams. He does a great deal of volunteering in the community and for his church, and is one of the founding members of the high school’s community service club, Leo Club.
