DCS seniors
participate in a taped discussion for WAMC Public
Radio's Youth Media Project: Student Town Meetings.

Students discussed issues surrounding
teen depression including bullying and teen suicide with panelists
Jeff Daly, medical director of outpatient services for adolescents
at Four Winds Hospital, Saratoga; Frank Doberman, director of Karner
Psychological Services, Guilderland; and John P. Halligan. Halligan
lost his 13-year old son to suicide three years ago and devotes much
of his time speaking about the dangers of undetected and untreated
depression.
Students in David Christopher and Mark Kepner’s Participation in
Government and Economics classes worked with their teachers and WAMC
Education Director Maryanne Malecki for approximately four weeks in
preparation for the taping. Students selected the discussion topic,
researched and studied pertinent information, identified potential
panelists, wrote and presented position papers and developed
relevant questions.
"Mr. Kepner and I were very pleased with the dedication and
enthusiasm students brought to this entire program," Christopher
said. "We were impressed by the students’ honesty, courage and
candor during taping and we appreciate the leadership role they all
took to provide this important information to the listening
audience."
This unique experience provided students with the ability to
defend and evaluate positions about attitudes that facilitate
thoughtful and effective participation in public affairs, respect
the viewpoints of others, focus on an issue and propose an action
plan to address the issue.
WAMC President Dr. Alan Chartock moderated the 60-minute
discussion.
The program will air on Wednesday, November 15, between 1 and 2
p.m. on WAMC Northeast Public Radio (90.3 FM). The discussion will also
be posted on
WAMC’s Web
site for easy listening.
