Third Annual Fitness
Challenge Family Field Day draws a crowd
 |
|
Students
and their families enjoyed singing, dancing and plenty
of activities during the third annual Fitness Challenge
Family Field Day. |
September 25, 2006 - Despite the rain, which
brought the third annual Fitness Challenge Field Day indoors on
Saturday, September 23, the event was a huge success with a
number of elementary students and their families in attendance.
There were plenty of activities to stay busy including rockclimbing, walking, a
soccer skills challenge, a bouncy bounce, sponsored by the
Student Council and activity
stations for climbing ropes, jumping ropes,
hula hoops and chin-ups. There were also several classes including
kid
aerobics, tae kwon do and Irish step dancing.
The popular Familes Sing program and a family square/round dance
with John Kirk and Trish Miller leading the activities had
everyone singing, dancing and laughing. For a photo gallery of the event,

The event was made possible with the partnership between Duanesburg
Elementary School, Duanesburg Area Community Center (DACC),
Cornell Cooperative Extension and Families Sing [a collaborative
project of the Mohawk Valley Library System and the Quaker
Street Branch Library.
Friends of
Sri Lanka Fund recognizes Duanesburg Elementary School's
contribution

Elementary School is inscribed on the boat pictured

Duanesburg Elementary School students, staff and families
received a plaque in mid-October from the Friends of Sri Lanka Fund
for raising more than $5,000 to purchase 100 new fishing boats for
villagers living in Hambantota in the aftermath of the December 2004
tsunami.
Elementary teacher Linda Armour coordinated the efforts of the
elementary school, which adopted the village of Hambantota in
southeastern Sri Lanka because it was the hometown of Cobleskill
resident Tuan Razik. Razik lost many close family members and
friends to the tsunami. Last year, DES spearheaded several local
fundraising campaigns with all profits donated to the Friends of Sri
Lanka Fund. Read

Students raise monarch butterflies
Students in Ms. Mezzio's second grade class raised
more than 30 butterflies from tiny caterpillars by feeding them
milkweed and watching the mystery of metamorphosis.
Students tracked the length of the chrysalis (pupa) stage and the
number of male and female butterflies that emerged. Once the
butterflies hatched the students set them free to start their
migration to Mexico.
A special thanks to Rosemary Jarves who collected caterpillars and
shared them with many classrooms. View more pictures in the photo

Community Visitation Day set for Friday, November 3: RSVP by
Tuesday, October 31
In recognition of American Education Week, parents, guardians
and community members are invited to attend the Elementary
School's Community Visitation Day on Friday, November 3.
Community support and parent turnout has exceeded our
expectations over the past few years. However, due to the large
turnout the schedule has been revised. We will no longer be able
to accommodate adults in the cafeteria during breakfast or
lunch. Two open classroom visitation times will provide an
opportunity for visitors to observe and participate in classroom
activities:
SESSION I: 8:30-10:30 a.m.
SESSION II: 1:00 – 2:15 p.m.
In order for the classroom teacher to plan for the day and the main
office to prepare for bus departure procedures at the end of the
day, please return the
visitation slip available by clicking here by Tuesday, October
31. Visitor sign-in/sign-out procedures will be observed as usual.
Bus slips procedures will be observed as usual unless you are
visiting in the afternoon and plan on taking your child home with
you. In that case, you will not prepare a bus slip.
Please do not plan to bring younger siblings during the Community
Visitation Day, as we’ve had disrupting experiences in the past. If
you cannot find a sitter for your younger child(ren) (ages 2-6), the
Duanesburg Area Community Center, (DACC), located at 185 Mott Road,
, has agreed to baby sit child(ren) for a $2 fee per child, per time
block. In order for the DACC to have enough staff on hand to
accommodate the extra children, you must call the DACC at 356-6400
to register your child by Tuesday, October 31.
