Students learning about traditional song and dance
from Trish Miller and John Kirk of Quick Step during
a three-day residency program at the Elementary
School. |
The dance is part of Duanesburg
Elementary School’s Third Annual Fitness Challenge Family Field
Day promoting physical fitness and health for elementary
students and their families.
Students in grades 1 through 5 have been participating in Quick
Step’s three-day residency program to become more familiar with
traditional song and dance before Saturday’s event. Read More.
In addition to learning dance
patterns, students develop social skills, build self confidence,
understand movement in rhythm, cooperation and carry on a part
of American dance heritage.
“It’s exciting to see our students being exposed to traditional
songs and dance,” said Elementary School Principal Dr. Katie
O’Brien. “The students are excited to physically participate in
this program and to learn about historical music as well.”
The popular Families Sing program is also scheduled from 1 to 2
p.m. There will be a variety of other activities including
rock-climbing, walking, a fifth grade soccer tournament
(weather-permitting) and a bouncy bounce, sponsored by the
Student Council.
There will also be a series
of recreation stations for climbing ropes, jumping ropes, hula
hoops and chin-ups. There will be several classes including kid
aerobics, tae kwon do and Irish step dancing.
This event is made possible with the partnership between
Duanesburg Elementary School, Duanesburg Area Community Center (DACC),
Cornell Cooperative Extension and Families Sing [a collaborative
project of the Mohawk Valley Library System and the Quaker
Street Branch Library].
