May 29, 2007 - A team of students including sophomore Corey Arndell, junior Holly Hoffman, sophomore Justin Perog, and sophomore Erica Remling did an excellent job representing Duanesburg and Schenectady County in the 2007 New York State Envirothon Championships at SUNY Cobleskill on May 23 and 24.

The level of competition was tough but the team placed 14th out of 53 teams representing the winners of county-level Envirothon competitions.

“This was an excellent effort and they really demonstrated great team work and skill,” said Superintendent Dr. Mark Villanti.

The Envirothon is a series of hands-on contests in which teams of five high school students compete to solve environmental problems. Students compete in five subject areas including aquatics, forestry, soils, wildlife, and a current issue; and they are also required to give an oral presentation based on the current issue. The current issue/oral presentation topic for 2007 is "Alternative/Renewable Energy."

Teams compete for recognition and scholarships by demonstrating their knowledge of environmental science and natural resource management. Beyond motivating students to learn more about the environment, the state Envirothon emphasizes the development of practical skills such as research, teamwork and public speaking. Winners of the statewide competition advance to the national Canon Envirothon in July.

Congratulations EST, nice job representing Schenectady County at the New York State Envirothon Championships!
