Kim and Reggie Harris
share music, knowledge of Underground Railroad
March
14, 2007 - Eighth-grade students received
a special treat earlier this month from musical performers and
educators, Kim and Reggie Harris.
The duo, which has performed
original contemporary folk music and traditional
African-American Spiritual and Freedom Songs for almost 30
years, gave a classroom workshop singing and discussing personal
freedom and self-determination as well as many aspects of the
emancipation of slavery and the Underground Railroad.
Students shared knowledge
gained from a recent reading assignment, Huckleberry Finn,
answered questions about geography and sang along with the
"secret code" sign language that the slaves used to communicate
meeting times and locations.
Kim and Reggie both have excellent voices and Reggie's acoustic
guitar really brought life to the entertainment and learning.
