Enjoy live music,
auctions, antiques and more at the fourth annual Duanesburg Days
February 28, 2007 - On Saturday, March
17, the Duanesburg community will celebrate its fourth annual
Duanesburg Days by recognizing its local heritage and culture, past,
present and future, at the Duanesburg Middle/High School. The free
popular event continues to grow each year – adding more activities,
exhibits, music and fun for students, parents and community members
of all ages.
The Duanesburg Central School District along with the Duanesburg
Historical Society, the New York Folklore Society and the Duanesburg
Area Community Center (DACC) will sponsor the day’s activities from
10 a.m. – 3 p.m. The day will conclude with a benefit basketball
game at 7 p.m. (nominal admission charge) sponsored by the
Duanesburg Education Foundation.
Musical performers include Kim and Reggie Harris, “The Ramblin’ Jug
Stompers,” and sophomore Colleen Holroyd playing fiddle tunes. The
concerts are presented in collaboration with the Quaker
Street/Duanesburg Branch of the Schenectady County Public Library
through a collaborative project of the Mohawk Valley Library System
and member libraries supported by Federal Library Services and
Technology Act funds.
The DACC will have a ‘live remote broadcast’ from the Buzz, WBZZ FM
105.7, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. to help promote construction of their
new community center.
The Parent-Teacher-Student Organization (PTSO) is sponsoring a
raffle, and live and silent auctions to help raise money for the
PTSO Community Assistance Fund, which assists families in crisis.
This year, all proceeds will benefit the Helfrich family to help pay
for extensive medical bills and other pressing needs. Todd Helfrich,
a father of three, is currently recovering from his second battle
with non-Hodgkins lymphoma.
Randy Passono of Collar City Auctions will run the live auction.
Donated items currently include a one-week vacation in a
private-home in Cancun, Mexico, antiques and an original painting.
Members of the community who would like to donate an item to the
fund should contact Hank Dunn at 895-2742 or Jessie DeLuke at
895-8310, ext. 401.
Two guided bus tours will be offered; one to Quaker Street and the
Quaker Street Meeting House where town historian Arthur Willis will
discuss the history of Quaker Street and the Underground Railroad;
the second tour will visit the Duanesburg Episcopal Church on
Duanesburg Churches Road. Interested parties should sign-up at the
welcome table on the day of the event. Both buses will leave from
the middle/high school.
The DACC will sponsor a free Bounce House and health/fitness
activities and demonstrations. A variety of other health and
wellness providers will be available as well as local antique
dealers, artisans, crafters and community/civic groups.
Student projects focusing on Duanesburg’s history and heritage will
be on display throughout the school’s hallways.
Community members will also have the opportunity to meet with local
government officials including Village Mayor Sally Burns, Town
Supervisor Rene Merrihew and Assemblyman Paul Tonko.
