Ganther
auditioned earlier this month and was cast as Daniel by SLOC
Director Laura Andruski. “In addition to having a wonderful singing
voice, John gave an extremely intelligent reading at his audition,”
said Andruski.
Ganther and
the cast have been busy rehearsing for three hours a day, four days
a week in preparation for the performances scheduled for March 9-11
and March 15-18.
“Once On This
Island” is a highly original and theatrical Caribbean adaptation of
the popular fairy tale “The Little Mermaid.” Sings and dances the
story of Ti Moune, the black peasant girl who rescues, nurses and
falls in love with Daniel, a mulatto from a wealthy family. When
Daniel is returned to his people, the gods who rule the island guide
Ti Moune on a quest to test the strength of her love against the
powerful forces of prejudice, hatred and death.
“I’m
definitely ecstatic about being in such a performance and honored to
be in a lead role,” Ganther said. “I encourage anyone to come watch
it because it’s going to be great.”
Ganther’s
budding resume includes performances in Melodies of Christmas, Area
All-State-Choir and Duanesburg High School’s production of "Fiddler
on the Roof." He also traveled and performed with America Music
Abroad for three weeks in Europe last summer. Ganther is a member of
the High School’s band and select choir.
“I am very proud of John David,” said DCS Music Teacher Mira Ordon.
“He has a great deal of natural ability and a real love of
performance. This coupled with his dedication and commitment has
gotten him this far. We can expect many more great things from him
in the future. Watch out Broadway!”
