Sing about peace and compassion at Duanesburg Elementary School's
Open House
Along the
shoreline of Hambantota, Sri Lanka rests a fishing boat with
Duanesburg Elementary School imprinted on its hull.
Local musician/singer/educator Ruth Pelham made sure to tell
students and their families of that during Families Sing, a
concert that was part of the elementary school's Open House
festivities on Sunday, March 5.
Last year, Duanesburg Elementary students spearheaded "Change
for a Change," one of several local fund-raising efforts to
help fisherman buy new boats to replace those lost after a
devastating tsunami hit Sri Lanka in December 2004.
"To date, hundreds of caring people - individuals, families,
schools, businesses, organizations, and clubs - have contributed
their pennies, quarters, and dollars toward the implementation of
tsunami relief projects," Pelham said. "Your sponsorship
of the Fishing Boat project helped us purchase and distribute 100
fishing boats to villagers living in Hambantota."

Families Sing
provided an opportunity for siblings, parents, grandparents and
classmates in grades K-3 to gather together and sing a collection
of songs promoting compassion and peace.
The well-attended afternoon sing-along was designed to strengthen
family bonds, foster an appreciation of music, and enhance school
curriculum.
Families Sing is supported by the Federal Library Services and
Technology Act funds, awarded to the New York State Library by the
Federal Institute of Museum & Library Services. This
performance was a collaborative project between Mohawk Valley
Libraries Association and Duanesburg Elementary School.
