2008-09 Proposed Budget
Budget Summary
Proposed Budget: $14,872,497

Dollar Increase: $869,267

Percent Increase: 6.2%

Estimated Tax Rate Increase: 3.98%

Residents to vote on $14,872,497 proposed budget
Duanesburg Central School District residents will go to the polls on Tuesday, May 20, to vote on a $14,872,497 proposed budget for the 2008-09 school year.

If approved on May 20, it would result in an estimated tax rate increase of 3.98 percent for property owners in the Town of Duanesburg.

Voters will also elect two candidates to the Board of Education and decide on a proposition to purchase three new school buses. Polls will be open from 1 to 9 p.m. at Duanesburg Elementary School.

The proposed budget represents an $869,267 spending increase over the current year's budget. Most of the increase is the result of contractual salary obligations, rising costs for special education and BOCES services, as well as debt payments for old and new capital projects. These factors, totaling $745,000, make up 90 percent of the spending increase.

Additionally, a large portion of the remaining 10 percent of the increase is the result of rising oil and diesel fuel costs.

While creating a school budget, it always a difficult process, these rising costs have had a significant impact on the 2008-09 proposed budget, leaving little room to trim costs.

After analyzing, reviewing and ultimately making reductions where significant savings could be made, district administrators and the Board of Education arrived at the proposed budget.

“With this budget, we have made every effort to balance the needs of our students while trying to minimize the tax impact for our residents,” said Superintendent of Schools Christine Crowley.

The proposed budget includes the implementation of full-day kindergarten, which is made possible through extra state funding. it also includes about $129,000 in new educational initiatives and $219,000 in proposed reductions.

Residents can learn more about the proposed budget by attending the public forum on Tuesday, May 6, at 7:30 p.m. at the middle/high school, or by reviewing the links to the right. District residents will also receive a detailed budget edition of the Soaring Eagle in mid May.
