2007-08 Board of Education Election

As part of the annual school district budget vote on May 15, voters selected two candidates to fill two open seats on the Board of Education. Incumbent Carlos Moreno was elected to his second term on the Board with 377 votes and newcomer Cecilia Tkaczyk was elected to the Board with 402 votes.

Trustee David Remling decided not to run for re-election.

Both individuals will serve three-year terms, beginning July 1, 2007. Board positions are unpaid.

Bios of both canidates:

  • Carlos Moreno of Duanesburg is seeking a second term on the Board of Education. He and his wife, Sheri, have three children: two attend Duanesburg Elementary School while one is just two years old. Moreno is a graduate of New York University and Boston University Law School. He is an Assistance United States Attorney for the Northern District of New York.

"After serving on the Board for two years, I am even more committed to working toward ensuring that our students get the best education possible so that they are well prepared to meet the challenges that await them," Moreno said.

  • Cecilia Tkaczyk of Barton Hill Road is seeking her first term on the Board of Education. Tkaczyk and her husband, John, have a son who attends Duanesburg Elementary School. Tkaczyk received a B.S. from Rutgers University in New Jersey and spent 15 years advocating at the New York State level on behalf of not-for-profit organizations engaged in affordable and supportive housing. She is a 4-H leader, Odyssey of the Mind coach and current a stay-at-home-mom.

"Our school system is a wonderful asset in our community that's providing a solid education for our children," said Tkaczyk. "As a member of the Board of Education, I can help to continue to strengthen that role."

Community members were invited to learn more about both candidates during the "Meet the Candidates" Night on Thursday, April 26, at 7 p.m. in the High School library.
